YOU CAN MASTER THE ART OF SHOW, DON'T TELL

Let’s be real: many writers struggle with the concept of “show, don’t tell,” and it can seriously impact their storytelling. If you’ve ever found yourself feeling like your narratives are flat or lifeless, you’re not alone! Here are some common issues that writers face when they don’t fully embrace this technique:

1. Flat Narratives

Without the art of showing, your stories can end up feeling one-dimensional. Instead of immersing readers in the moment, you might find yourself simply relaying events or emotions. For example, saying a character is “happy” doesn’t quite do justice to the joy they might express through laughter or excitement.

2. Reduced Emotional Impact

When you tell instead of show, it can be tough for readers to connect with your characters. Emotions lose their depth and resonance, making it hard for readers to really invest in the story. Instead of simply stating that a character is anxious, wouldn’t it be more powerful to illustrate their nervous fidgeting or racing thoughts?

3. Unengaging Dialogue

Let’s face it—stilted conversations can make your characters feel flat. If you don’t show the emotions behind the dialogue, it might end up sounding unrealistic or repetitive. Imagine how much more engaging a heated exchange becomes when readers can feel the tension in the room rather than just being told it exists.

4. Poor Visualization

Are you struggling to create strong visual imagery that draws readers in? When you rely on telling, the settings and characters can come off as dull and uninspiring. Instead of simply stating, “It was a stormy night,” why not immerse your readers in the howling wind and crashing thunder?

5. Difficulty in Pacing

Finding the right pace can be a challenge, especially if you're constantly summarizing events instead of showing them. This can lead to a rushed narrative that lacks tension and suspense, causing readers to lose interest in the story altogether.

6. Limited Character Development

Characters can feel static when you’re not showing their growth or struggles. It’s important to illustrate how their decisions and reactions evolve over time, rather than just telling readers about their backstory. This makes your characters feel more relatable and real.

7. Inability to Create Tension and Conflict

Tension and conflict often arise when you show rather than tell. If your story is simply explained, it can lose that element of intrigue that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

8. Feedback and Critique Challenges

Finally, if you’re not practicing “show, don’t tell,” it can be hard to take feedback on your work. You might find yourself feeling frustrated or uncertain about why readers seem disconnected.

But here’s the good news: these struggles don’t have to hold you back! Our 8-week workshop, "The Art of 'Show, Don't Tell,'" is here to help you tackle these challenges head-on. You’ll learn how to bring your writing to life and create stories that captivate your readers. Are you ready to transform your storytelling skills? Let’s do this together!

THE THE ART OF 'SHOW, DON'T TELL' HELPS WRITERS TRANSFORM THEIR WRITING

Joining "The Art of 'Show, Don't Tell'" workshop isn’t just about learning a new writing technique; it’s about transforming the way you tell stories! Here’s what you can expect to gain from this exciting journey:

1. Engross Readers and Create Immersive Experiences

Picture this: your readers are so drawn into your story that they feel like they’re living it alongside your characters. That’s the magic of showing! You’ll learn to craft scenes filled with sensory details, dynamic actions, and vivid imagery that pull your audience right into the heart of your narrative. Imagine keeping them glued to the pages, eager to discover what happens next!

2. Encourage Reader Interpretation and Engagement

When you show instead of tell, you open the door for readers to dive deeper into your story. They’ll get to interpret the emotions and actions of your characters, making the experience much more interactive. Instead of just passively reading, they’ll engage with the story on a personal level, forming connections that stick with them long after they’ve finished the book.

3. Convey Deeper Meanings and Emotional Impacts

Want to evoke emotions that linger with your readers? Learning to show rather than tell is key! This technique allows you to express complex feelings and themes in ways that resonate deeply. By illustrating emotions through actions and imagery, you can make readers feel everything from joy to sorrow, leaving a lasting impression that they won’t soon forget.

4. Develop Authentic Characterisation

In this workshop, you’ll discover how to create characters that feel real and relatable. Instead of just telling your readers about their traits or emotions, you’ll learn to show who they are through their actions, dialogue, and reactions to different situations. This authentic approach helps readers connect with your characters on a personal level, making their journeys more impactful and memorable.

5. Enhance Narrative Dynamics and Tension

Tension is what keeps readers on the edge of their seats, and “show, don’t tell” is your secret weapon for building it! You’ll find out how to convey conflict and stakes through actions and choices rather than simply stating them. This adds layers to your narrative, making it more engaging and exciting as readers follow along with bated breath to see what happens next.

 And...
Create an effective writing habit so you can continue the momentum long after the workshop is over!

I WANT TO ENHANCE MY WRITING SKILLS

Hi, I'm Heather

My life has taken me on a very different path than I expected as a writer...

I have been writing since I first learned my alphabet and I fell in love with stories and books way before that.
I never did take my English Teachers advice and stick to being a creative writer. I was too 'practical' for that!

I have used my writing skill in other ways - writing for business and tech. I was a developer and leader in IT Consultancy for too many years to mention and now freelance as ghost writer, UX writer and content creator.

I am also a certified business and life coach and trainer of NLP, personal development, coaching, Intuitive creativity, writing and tech.

As an Accidental Writer, I have a good background in online/digital marketing and content creation and am honing my skills with a range of additional courses, the current being Advanced Copy-writing - which includes many of the same skills as Creative Writing.

My Creative Writing Tips on Facebook is at 9200+ members and growing!

Why this 'Show, Don't Tell' Workshop?

I ran this workshop in 2023 as a 10 day intensive that spilled over into three weeks.

This time, I decided I wanted to offer writers the space to practice and absorb the learning.

'Show, Don't Tell' skills can transform your narrative and are as powerful in Creative Writing, Copywriting and as a general writing skill.

In addition, this is a very special -
